Objective

Be the first player to get rid of all your cards by forming valid melds (sets and runs) and going out.

How To Play Rummy

Draw Phase: Click the deck or discard pile to draw a card
Discard Phase: Form melds or add to existing melds, then discard a card
Going Out: When you can meld all cards (and have one to discard), you win!

Valid Melds

Sets: 3+ cards of the same rank
Runs: 3+ consecutive cards of same suit

Strategy

Watch what other players discard - don't give them cards they need!
Keep track of which cards have been played
Try to form multiple melds before going out
Discard high-value cards early to reduce deadwood

History

Rummy is a family of card games centered on forming sets and sequences of cards, and its origins can be traced to the early 19th century. The game is generally believed to have developed in Mexico from an older game called Conquian, which appeared in the 1800s. Conquian introduced the fundamental idea of drawing and discarding cards while trying to form melds.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, related games had spread throughout the United States and evolved into numerous versions. The name Rummy became established in the early 20th century, and games such as Gin Rummy, 500 Rum, and Canasta later developed from the broader rummy tradition.

Rummy's simple combination of drawing, discarding, melding, and strategic hand management made it adaptable to different numbers of players and deck sizes. Today, Rummy encompasses a large family of games played around the world, with regional variations differing in their rules for melding, scoring, and winning.
