Knucklebones

How To Play Knucklebones

Knucklebones is also known as Astragaloi, Dibs, Five Stones, Jacks, Jackstones, and Snobs.

A dice duel on two 3×3 boards. Drop dice into your columns to build big combos — and knock the same numbers off your opponent's board. When one board fills up, the higher total wins.

The goal

You and your opponent each have a board of 3 columns, 3 dice tall. Take turns rolling one die and placing it in one of your columns. The moment either board is full, the game ends and the higher total score wins.

A turn, step by step

  1. A die is rolled for you.

  2. Drop it into any of your columns that isn't full.

  3. Matching numbers in a column multiply — and your die destroys the opponent's matching dice in the facing column.

Combos — matching dice multiply

Within one column, a number that appears n times scores its value × n². Stacking the same number is the whole game:

6
one 6
24
two 6s
54
three 6s
17
4 · 1 · 4

So two of a number is worth 4× a single, and three is worth 9× — three 6s in a column is a massive 54 points. Mixed columns just add up (4 · 1 · 4 = 17).

Destroy — attack their board

When you place a die, it wipes out every one of the opponent's dice of that value in the facing column (the column lined up opposite yours). Undo their combo before it grows:

Chimp's column
→you drop a here
…it's cleared

Placing your 6 opposite their two 6s destroys both — their column drops from 24 to 0, and your 6 starts a combo of your own.

Winning

As soon as one board is completely full, add up every column on both boards. Highest total wins; a tie is a shared win.

One tip

Two levers win games: build combos in columns your opponent can't answer (their facing column is full), and destroy their stacks before they reach three. A well-timed wipe swings the score more than any combo you can build.

History

Knucklebones is one of the oldest known games involving small bones or bone-shaped pieces. The game takes its name from the knucklebones, or astragali, of sheep, goats, and other animals. These small bones have four naturally distinct sides and were used for games and divination in many ancient cultures.

Knucklebones was played in the ancient Mediterranean world, including Greece and Rome. Greek writers referred to the game as astragaloi, while the Romans called the pieces tali. Players could throw the bones into the air and attempt to catch them in different ways. Different throws and combinations of faces could have particular values, making the game partly a test of skill and partly a game of chance.

The game was not limited to adults. Ancient artwork and literary sources depict children and adults playing with knucklebones. The pieces were inexpensive and readily available, although more elaborate sets made from bone, ivory, bronze, or other materials have also been discovered.

Knucklebones also had a close relationship with ancient forms of divination. Because the bones landed in apparently unpredictable combinations, particular throws could be interpreted as omens. In other contexts, however, they were simply used for recreational games requiring dexterity and coordination.

Over the centuries, games using astragali spread and evolved into related forms played in different parts of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. In some traditions, the object was to toss and catch the pieces in increasingly difficult sequences. In others, players used the bones much like dice, assigning different values to their four sides.

Modern versions of Knucklebones are generally based on the tossing-and-catching tradition. Players may use actual knucklebones, specially manufactured pieces, or substitute objects such as small metal or plastic pieces. The game is an example of how a very simple piece of equipment can support a tradition of play stretching back thousands of years.
