Gin Rummy

Objective

Be the first player to reach 100 points (or win the target number of games) by forming melds and knocking.

How To Play Gin Rummy

Setup: Each player gets 10 cards. Take turns drawing and discarding.
Draw Phase: Click the deck or discard pile to draw a card
Discard Phase: Discard one card OR knock if you have low deadwood
Knocking: When your deadwood is 10 or less, the knock button appears!

Valid Melds (Same as Rummy)

Sets: 3+ cards of the same rank
Runs: 3+ consecutive cards of same suit

Knocking

The key mechanic in Gin Rummy! When your deadwood (unmelded cards) totals 10 or less:

The Knock button appears in the bottom-right corner
Click it to end the hand and compare deadwood with your opponent
The game automatically finds your best melds
If laying off is enabled, opponent can add cards to your melds
Player with lower deadwood wins points!

Normal Knock

Win: Difference in deadwood

You: 5, Opp: 12 → Win 7 pts

Gin (0 deadwood)

All cards in melds + 25 bonus

Opp: 15 → Win 40 pts (15+25)

Undercut

Opponent has less deadwood!

You knock with 8, Opp has 5 → Opp wins 28 pts (3+25 bonus)

Big Gin

All 11 cards meld + 31 bonus

Very rare! Maximum points

Deadwood Values

Face cards (J, Q, K): 10 points each
Aces: 1 point
Number cards: Face value (2-10)

Key Differences from Regular Rummy

2 players only (you vs AI)
10 cards per player (vs 7 in Rummy)
Cannot lay melds during play - only when knocking
Game tracks score across multiple hands
No jokers in Gin Rummy

Strategy

Try to form melds quickly to reduce deadwood
Watch what your opponent takes from the discard pile
Go for Gin (0 deadwood) when possible for the bonus
Be cautious knocking with 8-10 deadwood - you might get undercut!
Discard high-value cards (face cards) early if they don't fit melds
Drawing from the discard pile reveals what you need

History

Gin Rummy is a two-player card game that developed in the United States in the early 20th century. It was created around 1909 by Elwood T. Baker, a whist player, and his son, C. Graham Baker, and was derived from the older rummy family of games. The Bakers reportedly designed it as a faster, more streamlined alternative to traditional Rummy.

The game became particularly popular in the 1930s and 1940s, when it spread through American popular culture. Its quick games and emphasis on memory, deduction, and skill made it especially popular among actors and other entertainers. Hollywood helped give Gin Rummy a glamorous reputation, and the game became a familiar pastime in American homes and clubs.
