Bug Jar

Objective

Get rid of every bug in the jar. The counters beside the jar show how many of each kind are left. A counter is crossed out once that kind is gone.

You lose if the jar fills up so high that the chimp can't throw the next pod in.

How To Play Bug Jar

A cheeky chimp sits on the rim of a jar full of bugs, tossing in two-tone seed pods. Stack the pods so that four of the same colour line up with a bug, and the bugs are knocked out of the jar. Clear every bug to win the level.

Bugs and Pods

There are three kinds of bug, and each has its own colour:

  • Beetles are yellow. Yellow pods have dots.
  • Spiders are red. Red pods have a cross.
  • Grubs are blue. Blue pods have stripes.

The marks let you tell the colours apart even if they're hard to see.

Each pod has two halves, and they can be the same colour or different. The chimp holds up the next pod so you can plan ahead.

Clearing

  • Line up four or more of the same colour in a row or a column. Bugs and pod halves both count. They all pop.
  • When one half of a pod pops, the other half becomes a loose seed and drops down.
  • A pod lying flat stays put as long as either half is resting on something.
  • Falling seeds can line up and pop too. That's a chain reaction, and it's the best way to score big.
  • Bugs never fall. They stay where they are until you clear them.

A pod that has landed doesn't lock right away. You have a moment to slide or turn it into place first. The dashed outline in the jar shows where the pod will land.

Starting a Game

  • Level (0 to 20): use the arrows to pick where to start. Level 0 has 4 bugs, and each level adds 4 more, up to 84.
  • Mode: Classic (the pill) plays by the original rules. Jungle (the banana) adds power-ups and a hold slot.
  • Speed: one, two or three arrows, for slow, medium or fast.

The star shows your best score for the mode and speed you've picked. Press the big play button to begin.

Within a level, the pods fall a little faster after every 10 pods. A small + number under the speed arrows shows how many times it has sped up.

Clear a level to move on to the next, and your score carries over. If you lose, you can retry that level with a fresh score or go back to the menu.

Jungle Mode

The Banana Meter

The banana in the top-right corner fills up as you clear bugs. Each bug adds a little, and a chain reaction adds a bonus. Bugs cleared by a power-up don't fill the banana.

When the banana is full, the chimp gets a power-up. Tap the chimp or the power-up to use it. You can hold only one power-up at a time, and the banana stops filling until you use it. An unused power-up carries into the next level.

Power-Ups
Rainbow Seed (the rainbow star)
Half of your falling pod turns into a rainbow seed, which matches any colour. If it sits where a row and a column cross, it counts for both.
Coconut
Your pod goes back to the chimp, and a coconut drops in its place. The coconut can't be turned. Where it lands it smashes everything in a 3×3 square, bugs included, and those bugs score as usual. Your pod comes next.
Weed-Out (the sprout)
The game pauses and rings appear around the three bug counters. Tap a bug to pull every pod half of that colour out of the jar. The bugs stay, but everything else settles, which can set off a chain reaction. If no pods of that colour are in the jar, nothing happens and you can choose again. Tap anywhere else to back out and keep the power-up. Weed-Out is the rarest power-up.
The Hold Slot

The leaf cup in the top-left corner holds one pod.

  • Tap it to put your falling pod away.
  • If the cup was empty, the chimp throws the next pod.
  • If it already held a pod, the two swap.

You can use the cup once per pod. It's ready again as soon as a pod lands, and it glows green when it's ready.

Tips

  • Keep an eye on the pod in the chimp's hand, and plan where the next one will go.
  • Try not to bury a bug under pods of a different colour. You'll have to dig them out later.
  • Stack the same colour straight down a column onto a bug. It's the simplest way to clear.
  • Loose seeds make chain reactions. Set some up above a line that's nearly finished.
  • Keep the middle of the jar clear, because that's where every pod comes in. The rim flashes red when things get close to the top.
  • In Jungle mode, save the coconut for a tight spot, or aim it at a cluster of bugs.

Scoring

Only bugs score points. Knock out several bugs with one pod, counting everything its chain reaction clears, and each extra bug is worth double the one before, up to the sixth. The faster the speed, the more each bug is worth.

Bugs cleared by one pod Slow Medium Fast
1st bug 100 200 300
2nd bug 200 400 600
3rd bug 400 800 1,200

5th bug 1,600 3,200 4,800
6th bug and beyond 3,200 6,400 9,600
