The name Blackjack is believed to have originated from one such promotion. Some early American gambling houses offered a particularly favorable bonus when a player was dealt the combination of an ace and a black jack. Although the special bonus eventually disappeared, the name "blackjack" remained in use.

As casinos became established in Nevada and elsewhere during the 20th century, blackjack became a standard casino game. Casinos introduced variations in rules concerning the dealer's actions, payouts, doubling, splitting, and the number of decks used. These differences can significantly affect the mathematical odds of the game.

Blackjack also became an important subject in the study of gambling mathematics. In the 20th century, mathematicians and players developed increasingly sophisticated methods for determining the statistically preferable decision for different combinations of player and dealer cards. The development of card counting demonstrated that keeping track of cards already played could provide information about the composition of the remaining deck.

The game spread far beyond traditional casinos with the development of electronic and computer games. Blackjack is now commonly available on computers, mobile devices, and online gaming sites, as well as in physical casinos. Despite its long history and many variations, the fundamental game remains the same: players attempt to reach 21 or come as close as possible without exceeding it.
